Building a Fine Art Gallery Where Every Piece Is a One-Off and Nothing Has a Checkout
Designed and built an enquiry-only gallery for original and limited-edition works: a 21-category catalogue with no cart or checkout, provenance answered on every piece page, a multi-item enquiry list, and a 24-hour curator response commitment.
About the Project
BallysArt (Bally’s Art & Collectibles) is a Nottingham fine art gallery founded by Nev Ball in 2021, dealing in original and hand-painted works, collectibles, and Resinique furniture. Rorix designed and built the gallery end to end. The defining constraint shaped everything: almost every piece is unique or a numbered limited edition, so the standard e-commerce pattern — cart, stock count, checkout — simply does not apply. The site is enquiry-only. Prices are on request, every piece routes to a curator conversation, and the interface exists to carry a collector from browsing to a considered enquiry with provenance, framing, and shipping already answered.
- Enquiry-only commerce: price on request, a per-piece enquiry modal, and a 24-hour curator response commitment — no cart, no checkout
- Multi-item enquiry list on Limited Editions, so a collector can ask about several numbered works in one conversation
- One taxonomy across 21 categories holding fine art, collectibles, and Resinique furniture, with search, filter, sort, and pagination
- Provenance built into the piece page: certification, ownership history, and custom-crate logistics answered before the form is reached
Challenges We Solved
An Inventory of One
Almost every work is unique or a numbered edition. A cart, a stock counter, and an abandoned-basket email are the wrong primitives entirely — selling an original is a conversation, not a transaction, and the site had to be built around that rather than bolted onto a store.
One Catalogue, Three Very Different Things
The collection spans paintings and portraits, collectible figures, and Resinique furniture — coffee tables, round tables, shelves. A single taxonomy had to hold fine art, collectibles, and functional pieces without reading like a classifieds listing.
Trust Has to Come Before Price
With price on request, the page has to earn the enquiry. Authenticity, provenance history, framing standards, and how a piece actually ships all had to be answered on the page, before anyone would type their name into a form.
Collectors Browse, They Do Not Search
Buyers arrive without a search term and without a specific piece in mind. Filtering, sorting, and related works had to carry the discovery load that a search box carries on a conventional store — and the site had to rank without the product and price markup search engines normally reward.
How We Delivered
Enquiry-First Commerce Model
Replaced cart and checkout with a per-piece enquiry flow. The modal carries the artwork thumbnail, title, and artist, pre-fills the message with the piece name, asks only for name and email with phone optional, and states the 24-hour curator response commitment up front.
Multi-Item Enquiry for Limited Editions
Added an "Add to Enquiry" list across the Limited Editions series so a collector considering several numbered works can open a single conversation about the set rather than sending separate enquiries.
A Taxonomy Built for One-Offs
Three top-level types — Art, Collectibles, Resinique — over 21 categories from Abstract and Portrait through to Coffee Tables and Sculptures, with search, featured sorting, and pagination, so a mixed inventory still browses like a gallery.
The Piece Page as a Provenance Document
Each work opens with dimensions, edition, price-on-request, and SKU, then the narrative behind it, then Certification, History, and Logistics — a signed certificate of authenticity, confirmed provenance available on request, and a custom-built travel crate with full transit insurance.
An Editorial Design System
A high-contrast serif display over an ivory ground with gold accents and full-black feature sections. Every image is matted and framed in the layout the way a gallery wall frames a work, so the catalogue reads as a collection rather than a product grid.
Structured Content for Search
Breadcrumbs on every route, a targeted FAQ block on each page template answering the questions that actually precede an enquiry, and visible last-updated stamps — the discoverability an enquiry-only site has to earn editorially, without prices or stock to publish.
The Private Circle
Positioned newsletter capture as membership rather than a mailing list: first priority on new limited-edition releases and private invitations to gallery viewings, presented on black as an exclusivity moment on both the home and Limited Editions pages.
Framing and Delivery, Answered Everywhere
Put the framing and delivery terms — Italian solid wood, acid-free mounts and backing, canvases rolled and tubed with signed tracked delivery, bespoke framing on request — into a persistent global notice, so the answer travels with every page a collector lands on.
